A few additions and updates follow. Behold!
- Kings of Leon – I’ve listened through their earlier albums now, and stand by my assertion that it’s really kind of a different band. There are some winners (“Talahina Sky” is one of my favorites, along with “The Bucket”), and some forgettable tracks; it’s just a whole different style than the newer stuff.
- Keane – I picked up their latest full album, Perfect Symmetry, and found it to be a step down. I give them credit for not being formulaic, since it’s got a rather different sound, but I just liked the previous sound so well that it’s just a bit frustrating. Symmetry is a good record, understand that; it may well end up being one I like very well. The shock of the abrupt change, though, has tarnished its appeal somewhat.
- Death Cab for Cutie – The more I listen to them, the more I like them. They have a distinct sound, and don’t stray from it much, but it’s a good sound. “Atmosphere” and “I Will Possess Your Heart” are new recommends.
- John Mayer – I mentioned him in passing in the previous post, and my brother sort of took me to task for it in the comments. I did my best to refute his disdain, so you can see the reply for a full explanation, but here’s the short version: I am a huge fan of a particular subset of Mayer’s music, the electric blues rock-pop from the Continuum album. I found his performance from Austin City Limits on the net and have watched it numerous times because it is awesome. Mayer is actually pretty bland aside from that short period of his career, in my estimation, and it saddens me that he didn’t stick with that sound.
- Weezer – I added pretty much all of Weezer’s catalog last week and find that they’ve come up with a sound that works for them and stuck with it for a good long time now. I was especially interested to listen to Pinkerton, which apparently went a long way toward establishing emo as a viable genre, but didn’t hear anything that sounded as much like emo as it did Weezer. Maybe I missed something. Anyway, i like Weezer just fine, so I’m glad I picked them up.
That’s all I’ve got for now, although I did want to mention something else music-related: I was driving home at lunch the other day and the alternative rock station in the area was having a request hour. The first song that got requested? “Right Here, Right Now” by Jesus Jones. I know, I probably did the same thing you just did – Woh.
By the way, did you know that Jesus Jones was a band name and not the name of the guy? I didn’t. I’m sure it’s the same problem Hootie and the Blowfish had.
